2008 Election

I blame republicans!

In 1994 Republicans swept Congress, and took control, all in the name of “Change”. Instead of affecting change in Washington DC, they let Washington DC change them. I voted for President Bush twice. I don’t spend much time defending he and the republican party, mostly because they make it pretty hard to defend them. It has been a disaster. John McCain was not my first pick, and I think the choice of Sarah Palin was a stupid stunt. I am not surprised we got our tail kicked last night. The GOP earned it.

Never the less, I am disgusted at the outcome of last night’s election.

I am proud of my country for reaching the point where we can elect a black man President of the United States. I am proud to see history made in my lifetime. I am hopeful that it will be another step in healing the deep racial scars our country has. I admire Barack Obama for being the first Black man elected to the Presidency. And that is where my admiration stops.

I talked with many friends who were supporting Obama in his bid for the White House. Sadly, I could never get a legitimate, coherent reason for why they were. Of the dozen or so people I talked with, only 1 person gave me what I would consider to be a good answer. All I ever asked for was 3 reasons why they were voting for him. Inevitably, I got a list of reasons they hated George W. Bush, and Republicans. Except for that one individual, I never once got a policy or stance of Obama’s that they like and could articulate. Last night people voted for change, but they have no idea the change their going to get.

Socialism: A theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. (dictionary definition)

Barack Obama is a socialist. I don’t say that out of hate. I am stating it as a fact. Look at his past, his up-bringing, his associations, and his policies and you can see for yourself. If you can’t admit that, you’re either ignorant, or in denial. If you like socialism, then he is your guy. Me? I am still a fan of capitalism. I’ve talked to people who say capitalism is flawed, and they quickly point to the recent economic crisis as proof. I could write an entire blog on the economic crisis, but the source of the crisis is not a flawed capitalistic approach, it is a result of greed and corruption. You could argue, that capitalism breeds both greed and corruption, but I think thats an overstatement. Our flawed human nature is what breeds greed and corruption. If we’re comparing flaws, it seems to me that socialism will breed laziness and ignorance.

It sickens me to see so many people in our country expecting a hand out. The policies of Barack Obama will only increase that. Yes, there are people less fortunate. Yes, there are people who don’t have all the chances in life that I do. Yes, there are injustices in the world. I do NOT believe that government exists to fix all those issues. As a conservative, I believe the only reason government exists is to provide for the people, that which they cannot provide for themselves. Education, healthcare, business, are all areas where we the people can provide better for ourselves than our government has. Government doesn’t exist to save us! It is there to ensure domestic tranquility and provide for the common defense.

I believe in personal responsibility, and that is not a virtue democrats hold dear.. Instead we see other approaches. Only government can rescue people from the consequences of their own decisions. Only government programs can provide for your every need, and only government can use your money wisely enough to ensure your needs get covered. Individuals cannot possible manage to help their neighbors through their churches or community organizations, let along encourage people to do for themselves.

Obama made a speech in February of 2008 at UCLA. There he made one of his beautifully eloquent statements. “We have lost the understanding that in a democracy, we have a mutual obligation to one another – that we cannot measure the greatness of our society by the strongest and richest of us, but we have to measure our greatness by the least of these. That we have to compromise and sacrifice for one another in order to get things done. That is why I am here, because Barack Obama is the only person in this who understands that. That before we can work on the problems, we have to fix our souls. Our souls are broken in this nation.”

What a beautiful, touching statement, and how tragically flawed. When my soul is sick or broken, please Barack, please don’t try and heal it. you are not my savior. I have a higher one. The saddest and most frustrating part of this is that I am labeled racist and insensitive for believing the way I do. So the handouts will continue, the laziness will increase, and spending will continue to spiral out of control. After all, it costs a lot of money to save someone’s soul.

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.” – Thomas Jefferson

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most money from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy followed by dictatorship.” – Alexander Tyler, speaking not of the United States, but of the fall of the Athenian Republic. This quote is over 100 years old.

You wanted Change? Congratulation, you’re going to get it. I doubt you know the change you just voted for yourself. It is not the end of the world as we know it. But it will be a very bumpy ride, and you better believe I plan on holding President Obama’s feet to the fire when it comes to the promises he made.
